Maurice Boyau, leading French fighter ace of the First World WarMaurice Boyau, leading French fighter ace of the First World War, 1914 1918. The Captain of the French rugby team before World War I, Boyau (1888 1918) specialised in shooting down enemy observation balloons. In all he was credited with downing 21 balloons and 14 aircraft, making him the 5th most successful Fremch air ace of the war. He was shot down and killed by German fighters defending balloons on 16 September 1918.
